Bathroom. (2022)

This collection of work aimed to answer one this question ”what does it mean to prepare for something when you don’t know what that something is?”

I found myself repeating this question in my head all throughout the last year of high school, all my friends had plans for uni or study of some kind. I felt trapped in the sense that I knew I was gonna leave but to where to and to do what, I had no clue.

A very uncomfortable place to be in. Yet I believe a crucial one for most people my age.

The visual metaphor that I came across to fully express was this was what would it look like to live in a bathroom.

What does it look like to go past the normal things you normally do in a bathroom and then stay there for a long time more. What makes the work real is to get photos of a person being in bathroom for a long time I had to spend a lot of time the bathroom and I discovered that the bathroom is a very uncomfortable place to work.

Often the bathroom is one of the only places we allow ourself to be fully naked. We spend our lives clothed and covered but how long do we allow ourselves to just be naked and vulnerable to the space around us.

So welcome to my vulnerability, angst and discomfort.

I could not have achieved the look and feel of these pieces if it wasn’t for my artist models David Hockney and Brook DiDonato. Both of these artists achieve a sense of uncomfort through detail and framing which I have tried to pay an image to with my work particularly with Brooks work with the body and her perception of it.

Some other thank you’s would have to include my photography teacher  Sharlene Belcher for her encouragement and the space to explore this personal theme within the school environment. and also to my dear friend Lucien for his abilty to push thoughts futher and his brutal honesty towards my work which has helped refine something which could have come across as crass into a tastefull peice of work, Thank you.

A smaller collection from this larger body of work was Exhibited at Two Todman on the 14th of March 2023.
